semiotic knowledge vol. 01
i was thinking for a while which kind of tutorials i could throw up and the more i thought about it i realised that
its not only about knowing your tools. its also about using proper semiotic. semiology is the study of
the symbols and signs.
if you begin to think about it, everything is a sign. and everything can be interpreted according to certain laws and theories. this lession will focus on some very general aspects which you may already use correctly without thinking about it. its good to know it anyway.
lets start with an empty canvas and assume the following raster:
| every section of an canvas has specific functions. for instance in western culture the left side is defined as past and the right side is defined as future. this is a result of various factors. one of them is that we write that way - from left to right. there are also other terms that you can additionally assign to this raster, but it might be easier just to focus on this one for the moment since its one of the most important.
everything you do graphicwise will be interpreted that way. for instance take the microsoft logo and flip it horicontally and you will notice that it does not work anymore. not only the picture, but also the meaning is flipped. while it get constructed from the mosaic patterns when it is normal, it gets deconstructed the other way.
| now lets take a look at the image at the left side. according to the raster rei is looking into a negative future. she might be thinking about the war that is coming up and she might be guessing that the chances to survive are rather dim. the picture has an depressive overtone, but on the other hand it also speeds up, because you are preparing yourself for the things to come.
now lets flip the image and take a look what is happening with the meaning of the image.
| rei is now thinking about the past. it occurs that something bad happened somewhere back in time. you don't expect anything to happen in this moment. maybe you wait for some kind of flashback where you can see what kind of memories she is thinking of and which bad ghosts are hunting her soul.
the nice thing about the knowledge of these things is that you can use and find it in nearly every form of projection you can think of. you can trace it in movies, photography, 2d compositing, 3d renderings. try to analyse the compositing of the pictures when you watch tv. take a closer look on your newspaper. be aware that every picture connotates various things.
the author does not claim that his articles are 100% correct. he is not a natural english speaker and there is a high chance of mistakes in every way. corrections and improvements are welcome. ((21052K))
